Meerut Development Authority
With a population of 8.47 lakh, Meerut is a major city in Uttar Pradesh located on the borders of river Yamuna and Haryana. This has helped the region develop as an industrial and agricultural center, with fertile land and proximity to the capital of the country. With National Highway No. 58 passing through it and State Highway No. 18 nearby, this city is 70 km from the capital of India. Its location near Delhi, Saharanpur, and Lucknow means that cities connected by rail are accessible directly.
To provide well-planned residential facilities in the area, Meerut metropolis received cantonment status under Section 3 of Cantonments Act 1924 and Section 11 of Western Uttar Pradesh (Extension) Act, 1947. The cantonment limits include all land within the limits of Meerut Municipality and up to a distance one kilometer surrounding its limits by way of notification dated 1976-06-10 GOU Order No 19 reads "It is hereby declared that area within limits of MEERUT City Corporation (including notified areas extent to 73 sq km from 14Aug1999)and within radius about 1 km outside Municipal limit shall be an URBAN AREA" .

The Meerut Development Authority was established in 1976 by a Government Order. The first Meerut Mahayojana, which lays out the master plan for the city of Meerut, was created in 1978.
The Board approved the master planning authority for 2001 - 2021 on 24th May 2004. For the planned development of the Meerut metropolis, land has been acquired by the Development Authority for various projects.
